Post-surgery maintenance and treatment care — a phase-by-phase guide to protecting the result you invested in.

Patient with healthy, radiant skin after recovery

The operating room is where your transformation begins — not where it ends.

The weeks and months that follow your procedure shape how your final result looks, feels, and lasts. Swelling settles, tissue remodels, incisions mature into scars, and your body slowly reveals the outcome. How you care for yourself through each of these stages matters just as much as the surgery itself.

This guide walks you through recovery the way we do in the clinic — one phase at a time. Use the timeline below to see what each stage asks of you, then explore the core pillars of maintenance care that carry your result well beyond the final follow-up.

The Recovery Journey

What each stage of healing asks of you

Select a phase to see the priorities, the do's and don'ts, and what's completely normal along the way.

Phase 01 · The First 72 Hours

Rest, protect, and let your body begin

The priority now is stability. Your body is managing anesthesia, early swelling, and fresh incisions. Do very little, stay ahead of discomfort, and keep everything clean and supported.

Focus On

  • Rest with your body positioned exactly as instructed for your procedure
  • Take pain and prescribed medication on schedule — stay ahead of discomfort
  • Wear your compression garment or support as directed
  • Sip water often and take small, light meals
  • Have someone stay with you for the first night

Avoid

  • Any bending, lifting, or reaching beyond what you've been told
  • Getting incisions wet before you're cleared to shower
  • Alcohol, smoking, and vaping — they slow healing
  • Driving while on prescription pain medication
  • Checking your result too early — swelling hides it
Normal Tightness, bruising, mild oozing at incisions, grogginess, and feeling puffy or swollen. This is your body doing exactly what it should.
Phase 02 · Days 3 to 14

Gentle movement and diligent incision care

Early healing is about keeping incisions clean, wearing your compression faithfully, and beginning light movement to protect circulation — without overdoing it.

Focus On

  • Short, slow walks around the house to support circulation
  • Keeping incisions clean and dry; follow dressing instructions exactly
  • Wearing compression consistently — day and night if advised
  • Sleeping in your recommended position
  • Attending your first post-op appointment

Avoid

  • Baths, pools, hot tubs, or submerging incisions
  • Applying creams, oils, or silicone until incisions have sealed
  • Strenuous activity, housework, or returning to the gym
  • Sitting or lying still for long stretches
  • Removing tapes or steri-strips yourself
Normal Peak swelling around days 3–5, colour-changing bruises, itching as skin heals, and waves of fatigue. Steri-strips may begin lifting on their own.
Phase 03 · Weeks 2 to 6

Rebuilding strength as swelling recedes

You'll feel more like yourself. Once incisions are fully sealed, scar care can begin and activity gradually expands — always guided by your surgeon's clearance, not by how good you feel.

Focus On

  • Beginning gentle scar massage once cleared by your surgeon
  • Introducing silicone therapy for softer, flatter scars
  • Continuing compression to control swelling and support contour
  • Slowly reintroducing daily activity and light exercise
  • Prioritising protein, hydration, and quality sleep

Avoid

  • High-impact workouts, heavy lifting, or core strain
  • Direct sun on incisions — it darkens scars permanently
  • Rushing back to a full schedule before you're cleared
  • Skipping compression once you feel “fine”
  • Comparing your progress to anyone else's timeline
Normal Residual swelling that shifts through the day, areas of numbness or tingling, firm spots under the skin, and a result that still isn't final.
Phase 04 · Months 2 to 6

Refining the result and maturing your scars

The shape settles and scars enter their most important phase. Consistency with scar care and sun protection now defines how discreet your scars will be for years to come.

Focus On

  • Daily silicone and firm scar massage — consistency is everything
  • SPF 50+ on healed incisions any time they see daylight
  • Returning to full fitness and your normal routine
  • Discussing advanced scar treatments if healing is high-risk
  • Keeping your follow-up appointments

Avoid

  • Sun tanning or tanning beds on or near scars
  • Abandoning scar care too early — the window still matters
  • Significant weight fluctuation that can shift your result
  • Smoking or vaping, which degrades scar quality
  • Assuming what you see today is the finished outcome
Normal Scars that look pink or raised before gradually fading and flattening, occasional tightness, and small day-to-day changes as everything softens.
Phase 05 · Long-Term Maintenance

Protecting your investment for years

Your result is yours to keep — and to maintain. A stable, healthy lifestyle protects your contour and skin quality far longer, and thoughtful med-spa care can extend and enhance what surgery achieved.

Focus On

  • Maintaining a stable weight to preserve your contour
  • Year-round sun protection to keep scars discreet
  • A consistent skincare and hydration routine
  • Med-spa treatments to support skin tone and firmness
  • Annual check-ins with your care team

Avoid

  • Yo-yo dieting and rapid weight swings
  • Neglecting skin health as you age
  • Sun exposure without protection
  • Ignoring new concerns — ask us early
  • Assuming maintenance ends once you feel healed
Normal A mature, soft scar that keeps fading over 12–18 months, and a result that stays beautiful when supported by healthy habits.

The Pillars of Maintenance Care

Six habits that carry your result

Beyond the timeline, a handful of daily practices do the quiet, lasting work of healing. Explore each one.

01

Incision & Wound Care

Clean, protected incisions are the foundation of a discreet scar. In the earliest stage, less is more — gentle soap and water, no products, and no tension on the healing edges.

  • Keep incisions clean and dry
  • Let tapes and glue fall away naturally
  • No creams or oils until fully sealed
  • Avoid soaking or submerging
  • Protect from stretching and tension
  • Watch for changes in colour or discharge
02

Compression Garments

Compression is one of the hardest-working tools in recovery. Worn consistently, it controls swelling, supports tissue as it settles, and helps your new contour take its intended shape.

  • Wear exactly as your surgeon directs
  • Keep it on day and night if advised
  • Ensure a snug — not painful — fit
  • Keep the garment clean and dry
  • Don't stop early because you feel fine
  • Ask before switching to a lighter stage
03

Nutrition & Hydration

Your body rebuilds tissue from the inside out. Protein, hydration, and steady nutrition give it the raw materials for stronger, cleaner healing — and better scar quality over time.

  • Prioritise protein at every meal
  • Hydrate consistently through the day
  • Eat vitamin- and zinc-rich foods
  • Keep blood sugar stable
  • Limit salt to reduce fluid retention
  • Avoid alcohol while healing
04

Movement & Activity

The right amount of movement protects circulation and prevents complications; too much too soon strains healing tissue. The art of recovery is honouring both — guided by clearance, not impatience.

  • Start with gentle, frequent walks
  • Avoid lifting and straining early on
  • Reintroduce exercise only when cleared
  • Progress gradually, never abruptly
  • Respect procedure-specific restrictions
  • Stop if something feels wrong
05

Scar Therapy

Once incisions seal, scar care becomes the defining factor in how visible your scars remain. Silicone, massage, and sun protection — applied consistently — guide scars toward soft, flat, and faded.

  • Begin only when cleared by your surgeon
  • Use silicone sheets, tape, or gel daily
  • Massage firmly to soften tissue
  • Apply SPF 50+ for the first year
  • Stay consistent for 3–6 months
  • Ask about advanced options if needed
06

Rest & Emotional Wellbeing

Healing is emotional as well as physical. Sleep is when your body does its deepest repair, and the ups and downs of recovery are entirely normal. Be patient and kind with yourself.

  • Protect quality sleep every night
  • Sleep in your recommended position
  • Expect emotional highs and lows
  • Lean on your support system
  • Give the result time to reveal itself
  • Reach out to us whenever you're unsure

Signs that deserve a phone call

Most of recovery is smooth and predictable. But a few symptoms are worth acting on early — never hesitate to contact your care team if you notice any of these.

Patient feeling confident and well during recovery
  • Fever, chills, or feeling increasingly unwell

  • Worsening rather than improving pain
  • Unusual, foul, or increasing discharge
