Scar Management After Plastic Surgery

Surgery Is Only One Part of the Result.

Your procedure may be complete, but the healing process has just begun. The way your body recovers in the weeks and months after surgery plays a major role in how your final results will look. Proper post-operative care, especially scar management, is not optional — it is an essential part of achieving a smoother, softer, and less noticeable scar over time.

Why Scar Management Matters

Every surgical incision heals with a scar, but the way that scar matures can vary based on your skin, the procedure performed, tension on the incision, sun exposure, and how well aftercare instructions are followed. Early and consistent scar management can help support better collagen remodeling, reduce thickening, and improve the final appearance of the scar.

Incision Care (0–2 Weeks)

In the early healing stage, the priority is to protect the incision and allow the skin to close properly. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid sweating, stretching, or putting tension on the incision, and let steri-strips, surgical glue, or tape fall off naturally unless your surgeon advises otherwise. During this stage, avoid applying oils, creams, or silicone until the incision is fully sealed. Gentle soap and water are usually all that is needed.

Transition Phase (2–3 Weeks)

Once the incision is fully sealed, patients may begin gentle scar massage and use a fragrance-free moisturizer if advised. This phase helps support comfort and skin flexibility. If redness, irritation, or discharge develops, massage should be stopped and the area should be assessed by the care team.

Silicone Therapy (3 Weeks to 3–6 Months)

Silicone therapy is one of the most important parts of scar care. Once healing allows, silicone sheets, tape, or gel may be used to help improve scar texture and appearance. Tape or sheets are often worn for most of the day, while silicone gel can be used when taping is not practical. Consistency matters. A minimum of 8 to 12 weeks is recommended, and many patients benefit from continuing for 3 to 6 months.

Scar Massage (From 3 Weeks Onward)

After the incision has healed sufficiently, firm circular massage may be recommended for a few minutes twice daily. This can help soften the scar, reduce firmness, and support more even collagen remodeling over time.

Sun Protection (0–12 Months)

Scar tissue is especially sensitive to sun exposure. Daily SPF 50+ and protecting the incision from direct sun are essential, especially during the first year. Without proper protection, scars may darken and become more visible.

Avoiding Tension on the Scar

Tension is one of the main reasons scars can widen. Following your surgeon’s instructions about support garments, posture, and exercise restrictions is critical. Depending on the procedure, this may mean avoiding strenuous stretching, upper body workouts, or fully upright posture during early recovery.

Advanced Treatments for High-Risk or Imperfect Scar

Some scars need more than standard aftercare. In selected cases, additional options such as steroid injections, microneedling, or pressure-based therapy may be recommended, especially for hypertrophic or keloid-prone scars. These treatments should always be discussed with your physician and introduced at the right stage of healing.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

For some patients, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can support healing by increasing oxygen delivery to tissues. It may help reduce inflammation and support wound recovery, especially in higher-risk cases or high-tension closures. The number of sessions can vary depending on the procedure and healing needs.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Support

Scar healing is not only about what you apply on the skin. Daily protein intake, hydration, avoiding smoking or vaping, and keeping blood sugar stable all support better recovery from the inside out. Consistent healing habits can make a meaningful difference in scar quality over time.
